ADH/Oxytocin/Prolactin Podcast

We are looking at 3 hormones today. 2 of them considered neurohormones and are released by the posterior pituitary. They are oxytocin and ADH. The other hormone we will be exploring is prolactin.

So here we see the release mechanism for ADH. It is stimulated by the hypothalamus once osmoreceptors find water levels too low. It targets the kidneys, more specifically their units the nephrons.

Next we can see the positive feedback cycle of oxytocin during childbirth.

Lastly we can see the synergy between prolactin and oxytocin.

Pituitary Gland Hormones

Here is an overview of the hormones and neurohormones released by the pituitary gland. We are giving a brief overview of each hormone. We will be going more in depth with later podcasts. Below you will also have the Goat Flap, mnemonic.

Also here is a link for flashcards that will help you remember:

Negative and Positive Feedback - Podcast

So here are some visuals that should help you conceptualize some of these feedback loops.
The first one below is the predator-prey negative feedback model.

We can also view this in graphical form. This graph shows a fluctuation of both predator and prey populations as both increase or decrease.

Below you will see the thermoregulation negative feedback model. Notice that both deal with the hypothalamus, which we will be spending more time with later.

We also have the positive feedback model below. This shows how oxytocin release intensifies contractions during childbirth.

The last visual is of Ethylene, C2H4. This chemical allows fruits to communicate and ripen at the same time. One apple can indeed spoil the lot!

As always, Happy Learning =D.

Think Again - Sugar

It is important for people to be aware of the current scientific knowledge on sugar and it's affects. Diabetes may be one you've heard of but it also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In our society we tend to consume more sugar then we may be aware of and be risking our health due to it. Many times fats are avoided and 'fat free' products are considered healthy alternatives. However if something has more sugar in order for it to taste better and be fat free this may be just as unhealthy or even worse for your health. In addition all humans need to consume some fat in order to function. This video is just some food for thought, I hope you enjoy!

Think Again - Arsenic

Two million pounds of arsenic compounds are fed to chicken every year in the United States. According to an industry estimate 9/10 chickens in the United States are fed arsenic. So for quite some time consumers have been ingesting a cancer causing agent... that's nice. The FDA states that the levels of arsenic is safe to ingest, yet EU nations and Canada have banned the usage of arsenic containing chicken feed.

A bucket of chicken served from a fast food restaurant will contain about 2000% more arsenic than the allotted amount for drinking water. This ends up into our systems through bio-magnification. What is even more disturbing, chicken litter is also fed to cows. So in all essence we are feeding chicken arsenic, giving their poop to cows which contain arsenic, and we are eating both.

The state of Maryland is leading the way by banning the substance from usage. This is a great sign and should be followed by other states.

Another side note:

Chicken are also fed Benadryl, Tylenol and anti-depressants to keep their level of anxiety down (Terrible living conditions). They are also fed caffeine to keep them awake and have them spend more time eating. An endless loop of inhumane treatments. This is just scratching the surface, but please try to keep informed before making your choices.

Frontal Pioneer is a collaboration of teachers that focuses on the success of students. We chose the name Frontal Pioneer because in essence it is the frontal lobe of the brain that makes human's human. This exploration of ones own mind and ideas allows students to fully grasp what it is really like to become their best.
